AFP - Evista fights breast cancer with few side effects: study
WASHINGTON (AFP) — The drug Evista is as effective as Nolvadex in reducing breast cancer risks in postmenopausal women, according to a study.
Clinical trials of raloxifene, sold by Eli Lilly as Evista, cut breast cancer risk by 50 percent, the same rate as tamoxifen, sold by AstraZeneca as Nolvadex, which was also assessed in the tests of nearly 20,000 women.
Raloxifene, usually prescribed for osteoporosis, also produced a similarly low level of side effects with some advantages compared to the widely used tamoxifen, the study showed.
The study compared the effects of the two drugs on a population of women averaging 58 years of age.
